This is Peanut the turtle, shortly after being found in Missouri in 1993. She was taken to to a zoo in St. Louis where the six-pack ring was removed.
It seems that she was trapped in the plastic ring as a young turtle and was unable to free herself. Subsequently her shell moulded itself to the plastic ring and she grew in the strange shape you see here.
Unfortunately the damage is permanent, but peanut is expected to live a long life and today she serves as a mascot for the fight against beach littering. Please, always remember to clean up after yourself at the beach.More on peanuts’ story and current status: http://bit.ly/WnNWd8

Please keep your memories of the beach in your head, not at the beach.

Damn….

Please remember to clip your rings before you throw them away!

Or given the opportunity, do not purchase anything stored with rings. That plastic all risks killing something, be it wrapped around turtles or in the bellies of fish. The less of it you use, the more lives you have the potential to save.
Just to mention, this is actually a freshwater species of turtle. The plastic problems go beyond our oceans. Poor waste decisions can affect everything everywhere, from turtles in the ocean to turtles in your backyard.
Things like this don’t have to happen, and we can all play a part.
